What is Abrasives Wheel?

Abrasive grinding wheels are core consumables for industrial processing. Their classification system is based on abrasive composition, binder characteristics and dynamic mechanical properties. Mainstream products are divided into four categories according to abrasive types: alumina series (including brown corundum, white corundum, chrome corundum), silicon carbide series (black/green silicon carbide), superhard materials (diamond/CBN) and composite abrasives (such as zirconium corundum). Alumina grinding wheels occupy 55% of the market share, among which brown corundum grinding wheels are suitable for rough grinding of 45# steel with a cutting ratio of 1:120; white corundum grinding wheels are used for fine grinding of mold steel with a surface roughness of up to Ra0.2μm.

The bonding agent technology determines the performance boundary of the grinding wheel. The ceramic bonding agent forms a microporous structure through sintering at 1200℃, which is suitable for high-speed precision grinding (line speed 60m/s); the resin bonding agent adds copper powder to enhance thermal conductivity, so that the temperature resistance of the cutting grinding wheel is increased to 300℃; the metal bonding agent (copper-based/cobalt-based) is matched with diamond abrasives, and the wear ratio is as low as 1:5000 when processing cemented carbide. The electroplated grinding wheel adopts a single layer of abrasives arranged in an orderly manner, achieving a shape accuracy of ±2μm in the processing of glass cover plates in the 3C industry.

Continuous innovation in structural design: 1A1 flat grinding wheel accounts for 60% of the total as the basic type, and 27 type grinding wheel with tapered hole is dedicated to the automatic tool change system of CNC grinders. The porosity of porous ceramic grinding wheel reaches 45%, which solves the problem of grinding burns in titanium alloy and increases the processing efficiency by 3 times. Smart grinding wheel has entered the practical stage, and the embedded RFID chip can monitor the cumulative grinding amount in real time with an accuracy of ±5%.

Industry standards strictly regulate safety performance. ISO 603 stipulates that the grinding wheel must pass the blasting test at 1.6 times the working speed, and EN 12413 requires the unbalance amount to be ≤15g·mm/kg. Environmentally friendly grinding wheel uses water-based binder, VOC emissions are reduced by 90%, and the penetration rate in the automotive manufacturing industry reaches 40%. The frontier field focuses on the development of ultra-precision grinding wheels, and nano-diamond grinding wheels have achieved sub-nano-level surface processing of optical glass.

Types of Abrasives Wheel

Straight Grinding Wheels

Straight wheels are the most common mode of the wheel that is found on the pedestal or bench grinders. This is also widely used for centerless and cylindrical surface grinding operations.

Cylinder or Wheel Ring

This kind of wheel doesn’t have a center mounting support, but it has a long and wide surface. They are mainly used in horizontal or vertical spindle grinders for producing flat surfaces. Further grinding can be done with the end face of the wheel.

Tapered Grinding Wheels

A tapered Grinding wheel is a straight wheel that tapers externally towards the midpoint of the wheel. A straight wheel with a tapered wheel is generally used for gear teeth, grinding thread, etc.

Straight Cup

This straight cup wheel is used as an option for cup wheels in cutters and tool grinders. As it has an extra, surface and grinding are most favorable.

Dish Cup

They use this type of wheel in jug grinding and cutter grinding. It only cuts in crevices and slots as it has a very thin cup-style grinding.

Saucer Grinding Wheels

Saucer Grinding wheels are used for grinding twist drills and milling cutters. This is particularly in demand in non-machining areas as the saw filers are used by saucer wheels to maintain saw blades.

Applications of Abrasives Wheel

Silicon Carbide: This is sharp and hard and it can be brittle. It should use this only in grinding of low tensile strength materials such as grey cast iron, chilled iron, bronze, aluminum, copper, and brass.

Aluminum Oxide: This is slightly softer than Silicon Carbide but much tougher. It should be in cutting and grinding high tensile strength materials like alloy steel, malleable iron, bronze, etc.

Improved surface finish. Enhanced dimensional accuracy. Compatibility with a variety of materials. Efficient and versatile tool for shaping and finishing.

Q: What are abrasive wheels used for?

A: Uses of abrasive wheels
Abrasive wheels are used to modify or prepare surfaces (either internal or external). They use abrasive cut-off, face grinding or periphery grinding. They can also be used for cutting, polishing, sanding, deburring and finishing.

Q: What is the most common abrasive wheel?

A: Type 1 Straight Grinding Wheels
In general, the most commonly used types of abrasive wheels are: Type 1 Straight Grinding Wheels – straight wheels are a common type of revolution found on pedestal or bench grinders. It is often also widely used for centreless and cylindrical surface grinding operations.

Q: Which abrasive is used for?

A: Some common uses for abrasives include grinding, polishing, buffing, honing, cutting, drilling, sharpening, lapping, and sanding (see abrasive machining). (For simplicity, "mineral" in this article will be used loosely to refer to both minerals and mineral-like substances whether man-made or not.)

Q: What are the properties of abrasives?

A: The hardness, toughness, and friability of abrasives are crucial properties that determine their effectiveness in various applications. Hardness refers to the material's ability to resist deformation and wear, allowing it to efficiently remove material from the workpiece.
